Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar is Biblical historical fiction. Elianna was instructed by her mother to watch her younger brother, Joseph. Eliana convinces Joseph to go play where the flowers grow. They spend time playing and as Elianna goes to check on a lost sheep, Joseph is stung by a bee. She rushes him home, but he dies before they get there. Her father blames her for Joseph’s death. Her father does not want to move forward with his business, so Elianna starts taking over some of his duties to get the business up and running again. Elianna is betrothed to Ethan with plans to marry after she turns 17. With her family still dealing with the lose of her brother and the time she is spending working, the wedding is delayed. Elianna does wonderful things with her father’s business but things beyond their control happen that keep her needing to work. Ethan eventually quietly gives her papers of a divorce and he moves on with his life.
Elianna is the woman we read about in the bible that is afflicted with a bleeding illness. In this story she spend years and lots of money trying to find a cure for her illness. She spends a lot of time praying for healing. At a time of desperation, she travels to hear Jesus speak, thinking if she could just touch his clothing, she would be healed. She plans to touch his clothing and be healed without anyone knowing.
This is a very good story. It is so well written it is hard to remember that it is fiction. The author has done a lot of research to make the story true to the time in history. I really enjoyed this story. It is a story of family and love and doing what you need to for the sake of your family and others.
