“ A haunting tale of struggle and redemption. Sons of Blackbird Mountain is a portrait of grace in a world where the broken any find new life through the healing of mercy of love.”
Sons of Blackbird Mountain, by Joanne Bischof, is book one in A Blackbird Mountain Novel series. The story is set in Virginia in 1890. This is an awesome story that covers some difficult subjects. The three brother’s are grown men who are still trying to pay off the land their father purchased. To do so they are making hard cider. Their aunt writes to their cousin’s widow, Aven, and convinces her to travel to America to care for the brothers. She arrives thinking they are young children. Instead she finds Jordan nearing his wedding day. Thor, who is unable to hear or speak, drinks way to much to ease his private pain. And, Haakon, who is rather immature, is very bold and forceful about his attraction to her. Thor also is attracted to Aven and she shares his feelings. But she was married to their cousin who was also an alcoholic and still deals with the pain from that relationship.
This is a wonderful story. Even though I wanted to see what happened, I didn’t want to rush through it. This story is so powerful with Thor dealing with trying to stop drinking and with Haakon, loving someone who does not return his love. The story give great background to the way the brothers feel about each other. The story also covers neighborhood struggles that get out of hand and the abuse others endure. This is the first book by Joanne Bischof I have read and I look forward to reading many more of her stories. She writes so true to situations, it did not feel like I was reading fiction. The story just pulled me right into it, not wanting it to end. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys reading Christian historical fiction.
I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through BookLook Bloggers. This is my honest review.
