A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris

A Secret to Die for, by Lisa Harris, is a stand alone modern day romantic thriller. Grace is preparing herself to get through the week, the birthday of her little girl who died of cancer. To make it even worse, some one breaks into her home, breaks into her office and one of her patients is killed. His murderers are after her, thinking she has the information they want.

Nate was best friends with Grace and her ex-husband years earlier. He is now the detective assigned to the case. He has just returned to work. There was a bombing that killed his partner and he is dealing with PTSD issues. Nate and Grace have not seen each other in years.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Is it fast paced with a lot of action. While there are quite a few characters, they are well introduced and easy to follow. I especially liked Grace’s friend who was there for her every step of the way. The suspense in this story is so strong, I did not want to put the book down until I found out what information Grace supposedly had and who was after it. I was surprised by the ending, which made me stop and think, could this ever really happen. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this book.

Lethal Target by Janice Cantore

Lethal Target, by Janice Cantore, is book two in the Line of Duty series. This story takes over where book one, “Crisis Shot” ends. It is not necessary to read the first book to read this book, but I highly recommend it. They both are great stories with the main character being Police Chief Tess O’Rourke. In this story an eighteen year old boy is found dead of a drug overdose. Tess has suspicions of the real cause of his death. Growing marijuana is legal in Oregon, and Tess suspects his death may be tied to the pot farm. Before she is able to track down his killer, a person from her past shows up dead on her porch. She is told to take vacation time until his murder is solved. When it seems like so many people are against Tess, she finds herself drawn to Pastor Macpherson. Hi wife was a friend of Tess’s and was killed less than a year earlier.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It is fast paced and full of action and suspense. The story is so well written it was hard for me to put down. I like Tess’s honesty of her faith in God since her father’s death and her feelings about her father laying his life down for another person. I though the reference to Tess’s rules were neat. While the story felt so real, I would hope that when a Chief Police is told to take vacation until a crime is solved, that person would not continue working the case. I also felt something was missing during the investigation of the young man’s crime scene. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this story.

Everything She Didn’t Say by Jane Kirkpatrick

Everything She Didn’t Say, by Jan Kirkpatrick, is a fiction story based on Carrie Strahorn. Carrie Strahorn traveled the United States with her husband between 1877 and 1925. Her husband worked for the railroads writing about the country. His writings encouraged many people to move west. Carrie gave up having a home and a family to follow him. While doing so she journaled about her time and later used these writings to write two books.

This is an enjoyable book to read for anyone who is interested in the building of the United States. The author has done a lot of research to write this story based on true characters and situations. The story is told by Carrie with the chapters typically starting with one of her journal entries and ended with text taken from her books “Fifteen Thousand Miles by Rail”. The author has used those entries to write a good story that included Carrie’s adventures, heartaches and accomplishments. While this is a Christian story, the Christian aspect is not very noticeable. They attend church when there is one where they are and Carrie is totally devoted to her husband and follow him where he goes when he allows her. At times the story feels like something is missing. For these reasons I give this a 4 star.

Hiding Place (CD) by Tory Kelly – featuring Kirk Franklin and Lecrae

Tori Kelly’s new CD “Hiding Place” is a beautiful CD to listen to. Tory has deep musical passion and delivers an R&B infused, infectiously melodic take on classic gospel album. Tori’s voice is clear and easy to listen to. The songs, written by Tori and/or Kirk Franklin, are simply beautiful. Together Tori and Kirk Franklin have made a CD that is very enjoyable to listen to. I really enjoy this CD, it is so uplifting and encouraging and also contains the lyrics. With lyrics that are wonderful to listen to, the songs are reminders to me that God is there for me. Such as:

God take my heart, forever it’s yours make me your master piece” (Masterpiece – featuring Lecrea),

God help us to love, the way that you love” (Help Us To Love),

there’s not a hole to deep, that God’s love is not deeper still” (Never Alone – featuring Kirk Franklin)

I especially enjoy “Questions”, which speaks of the different seasons in out lives, the hard times we go through, and “Souls Anthem” (It Is Well) but I simply love Tory’s interpretation of Psalm 42. “As the deer pants for the water, so my soul needs you Lord”.

Tory is a L.A.-based singer/songwriter. Tori Kelly was the 2016 Grammy Award nominee for Best New Artist. Kirk Franklin produced this CD. Kirk Franklin, is a 12 time Grammy Award winning gospel artist.

I received a copy of this CD from Capitol Records, through fly by promotions, to review. The opinions expressed are my honest opinions. I was not financially compensated in any way.

A Christmas by the Sea by Melody Carlson

a christmas by the sea

A Christmas by the Sea by Melody Carlson takes place in Seaside Maine. Wendy Harper is barely making ends meet after the death of her husband. Her grandfather has past away and has left his beach cottage to her. She takes her son to the cottage with plans to renovate it and sell it to help out her financial situation. Her son has different ideas, he wants to stay there to live. Her goal is to be done with the cottage by Christmas.

This is a very touching story. I enjoyed reading how her son helped her so much. He definitely took on the helper role with the loss of his father. For being just 12 years old, he is very mature and responsible. I enjoyed reading the part that her grandfather did not let the cottage deteriorate, he did take care of the cottage so it just needed minor work. I also enjoyed reading of the memories Wendy had of the small town and it’s community members. This is a great story to read to prepare for the Christmas season.

Freedom’s Light by Colleen Coble

Freedom’s Light, by Colleen Coble, is Christian historical fiction that takes place in Massachusetts in 1776. Hannah’s husband John was a lighthouse keeper and when he went to fight in the Revolutionary War, his duties went to Hannah. He was killed in a battle at the beginning of the war and she now feels she is doing her duty to help with the war by keeping the light going for the sailors.

I enjoyed reading this story. Once it got started, it was a fast paced story with suspense and romance. It was interesting to read of the strictness and lack of caring from church leaders. Hannah is a very caring person. She continues to care for the lighthouse her husband was responsible for after his death. She also stayed near his family, who were not supportive of her. She took in an injured sailor, an infant and her sister, Lydia, when they needed her. Doing this brought discipline from the church despite her strong faith and Christian beliefs. The characters of Lydia, and Galen were both selfish people. Their part of the story contains the subject of living together before marriage. The story also touches on the neglect and treatment of Hannah’s parents and the abuse from Galen.

I enjoyed reading this story. I feel anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction will also enjoy this book.
