Mind Games by Nancy Mehl

Mind Games is the beginning of a new series, Kaely Quinn Profiler by Nancy Mehl. If this book is any indication, this is going to be a great series. This story is so full of action and suspense. While listed as Romantic Suspense, the romance is so mild and takes a back seat to the story.

Kaely Quinn is a profiler with the FBI that is very good at what she does. She sits down at a table and imagines having a conversation with the suspect. She typically gets great results and helps solve the crimes. But this time, the suspect is after Kaely and copies other crimes that she or someone she works with has been involved in. Together Kaely, her co workers with the St. Louis division and the FBI work to find the killer before more people are killed.

This is a great fast paced story. The thing I like about this story is with God’s help Kaely has able to move past what her father did and help others. I feel anyone who enjoys suspenseful crime stories will really enjoy this story.

I received this book as a gift from the author. I was not required to write a review.

Stratagem by Robin Caroll

Stratagem, by Robin Caroll, is a Christian Suspense novel that is full of adventure and suspense. A great “who done it” story with a great message.

Grayson is part owner in Game’s On You, which develops games for companies to use with their employees to pick the best candidate for a job. Grayson uses his psychology skills to develop the best game possible. Going against his better judgment, he allows his company to develop a game for his ex-wife’s employer. He goes on vacation, after helping set up the game, and when he comes home he finds out his ex-wife was killed while participating in the game and he is the prime suspect.

I really enjoyed reading this story. The story is very well written with well defined characters and scenes. It is easy to imagine watching the story unfold. With that being said, the story has several areas that just are not realistic and the crime scene is explained many times during the story, but it is still a very good story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris

A Secret to Die for, by Lisa Harris, is a stand alone modern day romantic thriller. Grace is preparing herself to get through the week, the birthday of her little girl who died of cancer. To make it even worse, some one breaks into her home, breaks into her office and one of her patients is killed. His murderers are after her, thinking she has the information they want.

Nate was best friends with Grace and her ex-husband years earlier. He is now the detective assigned to the case. He has just returned to work. There was a bombing that killed his partner and he is dealing with PTSD issues. Nate and Grace have not seen each other in years.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Is it fast paced with a lot of action. While there are quite a few characters, they are well introduced and easy to follow. I especially liked Grace’s friend who was there for her every step of the way. The suspense in this story is so strong, I did not want to put the book down until I found out what information Grace supposedly had and who was after it. I was surprised by the ending, which made me stop and think, could this ever really happen. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this book.

Lethal Target by Janice Cantore

Lethal Target, by Janice Cantore, is book two in the Line of Duty series. This story takes over where book one, “Crisis Shot” ends. It is not necessary to read the first book to read this book, but I highly recommend it. They both are great stories with the main character being Police Chief Tess O’Rourke. In this story an eighteen year old boy is found dead of a drug overdose. Tess has suspicions of the real cause of his death. Growing marijuana is legal in Oregon, and Tess suspects his death may be tied to the pot farm. Before she is able to track down his killer, a person from her past shows up dead on her porch. She is told to take vacation time until his murder is solved. When it seems like so many people are against Tess, she finds herself drawn to Pastor Macpherson. Hi wife was a friend of Tess’s and was killed less than a year earlier.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It is fast paced and full of action and suspense. The story is so well written it was hard for me to put down. I like Tess’s honesty of her faith in God since her father’s death and her feelings about her father laying his life down for another person. I though the reference to Tess’s rules were neat. While the story felt so real, I would hope that when a Chief Police is told to take vacation until a crime is solved, that person would not continue working the case. I also felt something was missing during the investigation of the young man’s crime scene. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this story.

Justice Betrayed by Patricia Bradley

9780800727161 (1)

Justice Betrayed, by Patricia Bradley, is book 3 in A Memphis Cold Case Novel series. This is a romantic suspense story that will keep you reading to find out “who done it”. Even thought this is a series and some characters are introduced in the previous book, this book can also be a stand alone story.

The story takes place in Memphis during Elvis week. One of the Elvis impersonators comes to Detective Rachel Sloan with information regarding a cold case murder. Very soon after he is murdered. Another impersonator has his medication tampered with and almost dies. Rachel is knee deep in the investigation that could be linked to her mothers death many years earlier. She gets help from her co-worker Boone, who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend, to try to find out who the killer is.

I really enjoyed this story. It has many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing who the murderer is. It is very fast paced and does not have an overly large amount of characters. Each of the characters are well introduced, so it is easy to follow the story. I enjoyed the way Rachel and Boone were able to work together and how they were able to put their past behind them to solve the case. I also enjoyed the references to the elderly women who went to the Elvis activities as well as to her grandmothers who do not get into modern technology. I feel anyone who enjoys police stories will enjoy this story. It is a good clean story with a lot of suspense and mystery alone with a little romance.

I received a copy of this book from Revel publishing. This is my honest review.

Beneath the Surface is book one in the Dive Team Investigations series written by Lynn H. Blackburn.

This is the beginning to a great new series. The series is full of adventure, suspense, mystery and a touch of romance.

Ryan is part of the Carrington County Sheriff’s Office dive team. While on a dive, the team finds a body in the lake. The team uses Leigh’s dock as a place to do the investigation.

Leigh has recently returned to her parent’s home to take a job at the local hospital emergency room. Things begin happening to Leigh that threaten her life. Ryan, along with others from the sheriff’s office are guarding her around the clock to keep her safe.

As the investigation goes on, it is suspected the deaths and the threat on Leigh’s life are connected. Leigh’s brother and Ryan are best friends and Ryan has been asked to keep an eye out for Leigh to keep her safe.

This book is full of suspense and action with many twists and turns. It kept me guessing all the way to the end as to who the killer was and why. The story is well written and was easy to follow all the action. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes good clean police stories.

Imperfect Justice by Cara Putman

Imperfect Justice by Cara Putman is book 2 in the Hidden Justice series. This is one of those books you will not want to put down until you finish it! While part of a series, it is a very good stand alone book as well. The story takes off running and the suspense builds during the story.

Emilie Wesley is an attorney for a women’s resource center. She helps women who want to escape from their abusers. While she is at the court house waiting for Kaylene, to move forward with Kaylene’s restraining order against her husband, things have gone terribly bad at Kaylene’s house. Kaylene is accused of shooting her daughter’s and then herself. This event has totally shaken Emilie and she cannot move on without getting to the bottom of what really happened. She is all consumed with Kaylene’s death and neglects her other client and her reporting job.

Some time before Kaylene’s death, she delivered boxes to her brother’s home and tells him, Reid, not to open them. He opened them after her death to find a letter from her asking him to watch over her daughters should something happen to her and to contact her attorney. Reid and Emilie start working together to find evidence that will hold up in court for Reid to get custody of Kaylene’s surviving daughter.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is full of action and suspense. While the topic of abused women and children is a tough subject to read about, the author did a great job of not dwelling on that, but rather wrote about the legal issues involved with them getting away. I think anyone who enjoys legal thrillers will enjoy this book. There is just a little romance in the story for the romance readers as well.

Vanishing Point by Lisa Harris

Vanishing Point, by Lisa Harris, is book 4 in A Nikki Boyd Novel series. This book spans 13 years with the murder of teen age girls. Garrett Addison is a new criminal investigator with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation when his team is called out to investigate the deal of a teen age girl.

Jordan Lambert is with the FBI. One of her co-workers is assigned this case as well. Knowing her family lives in the area, he asks for her to go with him. Garrett and Jordan went to the police academy together and had not seen each other since Jordan joined the FBI. Even though both have moved on with their lives, they still have feeling for each other.

This is a very good suspenseful story that will keep you reading to find out “who done it.” Even though it is part of a series, this book is a very good stand alone story. Having read other Nikki Boyd stories I was surprised to find she was not the main character of this story. This story does cover the murder of her sister, Sarah. This is the reason Nikki goes into law enforcement.

The thing that comes out for me with this book is “Where is God when bad things happen.” I especially liked Garret and Jordan’s discussion on page 284 where they talk about when bad things happen, we start to see God’s grace.

A Time To Stand by Robert Whitlow

A Time to Stand by Robert Whitlow is the perfect book to curl up with and read! This contemporary fiction takes place in Georgia. Adisa Johnson, a young African-American attorney is working in Atlanta when she loses her job. At the same time her great aunt, who raised her, suffers from a stroke and needs some one to care for her. Adisa returns home to Campbellton to be near her great aunt. She takes a temporary job with a law firm under the condition she represent the white police officer that shot a black youth.

If you enjoy legal dramas you will totally enjoy this story. The story is very well written and focuses on forgiveness and doing what is right. The story feels like it could be taken from today’s newspapers, very current and very real. The things that stands out to me is Aunt Josie walking through the town praying for members of the community. I also respect the character of Thelma Armistead, having the strength to stand in front of her church and forgive those involved in the shooting of her grandson. I felt frustrated with the pastor’s position, I wished he would have had more forgiveness and less demand for justice. Overall this is a very good story, it is not so fast moving that the reader struggles to keep up with the story. The characters are very well introduced with background information so they are easy to follow.

As A Shield by Danny & Wanda Pelfrey

As a Shield: A Davis Morgan Mystery is about former Pastor Davis. After the death of his wife, he no longer pastors a church but is a pastor for the local law enforcement. He often rides with officer and friend Charley. Davis’s daughter is soon to be married. She and her fiance are purchasing an old house that no one has lived in but are finding their lives threatened. Two men have been hired to stop them from buying the home. The men have kidnapped the wrong lady and shot the wrong man. A visitor in town dies of natural causes but his body is stolen from the funeral home. Tattooed on his body is a location in the area.

Davis works with Charley to try to find who is threatening his daughter and her fiance. While doing so the plane they are flying in goes down and Charley’s squad car is totaled.

This is a very enjoyable mystery to get lost in. One of the things that stands out for me with this book is the friendship of the two men. As well as how Charley feels since he is not a Christian, that God was watching out for Davis and Charley’s life was saved as well. I enjoyed the humor that is woven through the story as well. I really enjoyed this book. It kept me reading until I was done reading it and kept me guessing. I am looking forward to more in this series. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to read a good mystery.
