Dangerous Ambitions by Irene Hannon

Dark Ambitions, by Irene Hannon, is book three in the Code of Honor series. Rick Jordan is checking his property when he finds blood and then an item that he links back to his military friend. He has told his friend, “If I can do anything for you, all you have to do is pick up the phone or email me or knock on my door.” Now Rick cannot get in touch with him and turns to PI Heather Shields for help. Their investigation links two deaths and the suspect is a politician running for governor.

This is a fantastic romantic suspense. The story is well written and is easy to get pulled in to. The story has a lot of action and suspense and it was not until the very end that I was able to figure out the person behind the deaths. While it is part of a series, for the most part it is also a good stand alone story. The story briefly mentions people from the earlier books. And in the beginning the characters were brought in quickly without detailed introductions. This made it a little difficult to keep the characters straight in the beginning. This is a good clean crime story with the topics of murder, theft and difficult childhoods.

I received a copy of this book from the Revell Reads Blogger Program. This is my honest review.

Always Look Twice by Elizabeth Goddard

Always Look Twice is book two in the Uncommon Justice Series by Elizabeth Goddard. This is a modern day romantic suspense that takes place in Bridger County, Wyoming. Harper and her sister, Emily, have returned to their childhood hometown as Emily rushes to meet the deadline for her new book. Harper is on leave from her job as a crime scene photographer, as a result from covering a case very similar to her own childhood tragedy. While photographing in the national forest, she witnesses and photographs a murder. When she sees the murderer watching her she tries to run but falls, gets hurt and loses her camera. When the body is not found, it is questioned if she really witnessed a murder.

Heath is the owner of a guest ranch. While out with his guests he hears a scream and a gun shot and takes off to investigate. He finds Emily, a really good friend from childhood. Heath is also a volunteer with the local law enforcement and is assigned to protect Emily. The local law enforcement is low on staff and has multiple crimes taking place at the same time. That include the bombings of mailboxes, a guest cabin at Heath’s ranch and a building in town.

This is a great story. Being part of a series, this is also great stand alone story. The story lightly references the characters from the first book. This story is full of adventure and suspense with a touch of romance. The Christian aspect of the book is very mild, but the story has a good message of faith, caring for others and second chances. This is a great book that is hard to put down. I was kept guessing almost to the end as to who the criminal was. I would highly recommend this story to those who enjoy crime stories.

The Gryphon Heist by James R. Hannibal

The Gryphon Heist, by James R. Hannibal, is book one of two in the Talia Inger series. Talia is fresh out of CIA training and hoping to get assigned to the Moscow desk but instead is assigned to a department in Eastern Europe called “Other”. As a new agent she gets assigned to a case that is so action packed and full of surprises she doesn’t know who she can trust. She has had ongoing health issues since the death of her father. As she works the case, things are revealed that let her know his death was not a simple accident.

This story is action packed almost from page one and doesn’t slow down until the end. This is not a fast read. There is also a lot of violence with the fighting and killings. There is so much happening in the story with so many characters, I struggled with keeping up with it at times. We see the Christian aspect of the story through one of people assigned to the case and how it has changed him and how that affects Talia.

Cold Aim by Janice Cantore

Cold Aim, by Janie Cantore, is book three in the Line of Duty series. This book is awesome! The characters are well defined, following through from the previous two books in the series. The story is well told and very believable. The story is full of action and suspense.

Rogue Hollow is suffering from a terrible fire when the FBI asks for one of their witnesses in a high profile case to be kept there for safety. When the witness sneaks into town and is seen by one of the extra workers in the area, her cover is blown. The person after her will stop at nothing to get her. The small local law enforcement are working around the clock to stop him.

The romance between Police Chief Tess O’Rourke and Pastor Oliver Macpherson is questioned by some of his parishioners, and even themselves. Friends don’t think they are a good match, that they are like oil and water. So they have to work to prove friends wrong.

I have enjoyed this whole series. The stories are written so good, with enough background information, that they do not have to be read in order to follow. The author is a retired police officer, and it shows in the realistic stories that she writes. This one focuses on human trafficking and contains numerous murders and several different crimes needing to be solved. I enjoyed how the internet and hacking is used as a mean for finding information. I appreciate the Christian aspect to the story as well. It is light and not preachy. Tess’s father was quick to turn to prayer in times of difficulties, and this is something she is learning. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys police stories.

Vow of Justice by Lynette Eason

mail (2)

Vow of Justice, by Lynette Eason, is book four in the Blue Justice series. This series follows the St. John family through crime situations. The book is written so that it works as a stand alone story as well. But it is so good, you will want to go back and read the whole series. This book is about FBI agent Linc and his partner Allison.

This story takes off with the first page and doesn’t stop until the end. There is so much action within the story, it is hard to find a place to put the book down. While the author had help from real agents with writing this book, some of the parts were a little hard to believe. The book is also full of suspense. It is easy to think someone in the agency is connected to the bad guys with how the trouble finds Allison where ever she goes. Even with all the injuries she sustains and others believe she has been killed, she keeps working to find the bad guys.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys crime stories. There is romance in the story between the partners, but it does not over power the story.

Deadly Intentions by Lisa Harris

mail (3)

Deadly Intentions by Lisa Harris is a stand alone Romantic Suspense Christian novel. Detective Josh Solomon’s wife was killed in a supposed home invasion. Now months later, he receives a call from her co-worker and friend Caitlyn. Two other co-workers have died recently and Caitlyn feels the deaths are connected to a project they all worked on. And now she is being targeted. When Josh brings this to his superior he is told to take a vacation and forget about the deaths. Instead Josh and Caitlyn work together to find out the truth behinds the deaths.

This is a fantastic crime story. The story is full of action and suspense right from the beginning. The writing is so clear, it is easy to envision what is happening. The characters are well defined, with strong faith and Christian beliefs that get them through the struggles they are forced into. Yet, the story is not preachy to turn off the reader. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys good, clean “who done it”crime stories.

Mind Games by Nancy Mehl

Mind Games is the beginning of a new series, Kaely Quinn Profiler by Nancy Mehl. If this book is any indication, this is going to be a great series. This story is so full of action and suspense. While listed as Romantic Suspense, the romance is so mild and takes a back seat to the story.

Kaely Quinn is a profiler with the FBI that is very good at what she does. She sits down at a table and imagines having a conversation with the suspect. She typically gets great results and helps solve the crimes. But this time, the suspect is after Kaely and copies other crimes that she or someone she works with has been involved in. Together Kaely, her co workers with the St. Louis division and the FBI work to find the killer before more people are killed.

This is a great fast paced story. The thing I like about this story is with God’s help Kaely has able to move past what her father did and help others. I feel anyone who enjoys suspenseful crime stories will really enjoy this story.

I received this book as a gift from the author. I was not required to write a review.

Stratagem by Robin Caroll

Stratagem, by Robin Caroll, is a Christian Suspense novel that is full of adventure and suspense. A great “who done it” story with a great message.

Grayson is part owner in Game’s On You, which develops games for companies to use with their employees to pick the best candidate for a job. Grayson uses his psychology skills to develop the best game possible. Going against his better judgment, he allows his company to develop a game for his ex-wife’s employer. He goes on vacation, after helping set up the game, and when he comes home he finds out his ex-wife was killed while participating in the game and he is the prime suspect.

I really enjoyed reading this story. The story is very well written with well defined characters and scenes. It is easy to imagine watching the story unfold. With that being said, the story has several areas that just are not realistic and the crime scene is explained many times during the story, but it is still a very good story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris

A Secret to Die for, by Lisa Harris, is a stand alone modern day romantic thriller. Grace is preparing herself to get through the week, the birthday of her little girl who died of cancer. To make it even worse, some one breaks into her home, breaks into her office and one of her patients is killed. His murderers are after her, thinking she has the information they want.

Nate was best friends with Grace and her ex-husband years earlier. He is now the detective assigned to the case. He has just returned to work. There was a bombing that killed his partner and he is dealing with PTSD issues. Nate and Grace have not seen each other in years.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Is it fast paced with a lot of action. While there are quite a few characters, they are well introduced and easy to follow. I especially liked Grace’s friend who was there for her every step of the way. The suspense in this story is so strong, I did not want to put the book down until I found out what information Grace supposedly had and who was after it. I was surprised by the ending, which made me stop and think, could this ever really happen. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this book.

Lethal Target by Janice Cantore

Lethal Target, by Janice Cantore, is book two in the Line of Duty series. This story takes over where book one, “Crisis Shot” ends. It is not necessary to read the first book to read this book, but I highly recommend it. They both are great stories with the main character being Police Chief Tess O’Rourke. In this story an eighteen year old boy is found dead of a drug overdose. Tess has suspicions of the real cause of his death. Growing marijuana is legal in Oregon, and Tess suspects his death may be tied to the pot farm. Before she is able to track down his killer, a person from her past shows up dead on her porch. She is told to take vacation time until his murder is solved. When it seems like so many people are against Tess, she finds herself drawn to Pastor Macpherson. Hi wife was a friend of Tess’s and was killed less than a year earlier.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It is fast paced and full of action and suspense. The story is so well written it was hard for me to put down. I like Tess’s honesty of her faith in God since her father’s death and her feelings about her father laying his life down for another person. I though the reference to Tess’s rules were neat. While the story felt so real, I would hope that when a Chief Police is told to take vacation until a crime is solved, that person would not continue working the case. I also felt something was missing during the investigation of the young man’s crime scene. I feel anyone who enjoys crime stories will enjoy this story.
