Vanishing Point by Lisa Harris

7043012_jumbo

Vanishing Point, by Lisa Harris, is book 4 in A Nikki Boyd Novel series. This book spans 13 years with the murder of teen age girls. Garrett Addison is a new criminal investigator with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation when his team is called out to investigate the deal of a teen age girl.

Jordan Lambert is with the FBI. One of her co-workers is assigned this case as well. Knowing her family lives in the area, he asks for her to go with him. Garrett and Jordan went to the police academy together and had not seen each other since Jordan joined the FBI. Even though both have moved on with their lives, they still have feeling for each other.

This is a very good suspenseful story that will keep you reading to find out “who done it.” Even though it is part of a series, this book is a very good stand alone story. Having read other Nikki Boyd stories I was surprised to find she was not the main character of this story. This story does cover the murder of her sister, Sarah. This is the reason Nikki goes into law enforcement.

The thing that comes out for me with this book is “Where is God when bad things happen.” I especially liked Garret and Jordan’s discussion on page 284 where they talk about when bad things happen, we start to see God’s grace.

I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing. This is my honest review.

A Time To Stand by Robert Whitlow

atts.jpg

A Time to Stand by Robert Whitlow is the perfect book to curl up with and read! This contemporary fiction takes place in Georgia. Adisa Johnson, a young African-American attorney is working in Atlanta when she loses her job. At the same time her great aunt, who raised her, suffers from a stroke and needs some one to care for her. Adisa returns home to Campbellton to be near her great aunt. She takes a temporary job with a law firm under the condition she represent the white police officer that shot a black youth.

If you enjoy legal dramas you will totally enjoy this story. The story is very well written and focuses on forgiveness and doing what is right. The story feels like it could be taken from today’s newspapers, very current and very real. The things that stands out to me is Aunt Josie walking through the town praying for members of the community. I also respect the character of Thelma Armistead, having the strength to stand in front of her church and forgive those involved in the shooting of her grandson. I felt frustrated with the pastor’s position, I wished he would have had more forgiveness and less demand for justice. Overall this is a very good story, it is not so fast moving that the reader struggles to keep up with the story. The characters are very well introduced with background information so they are easy to follow.

As A Shield by Danny & Wanda Pelfrey

AsAShieldLargeFront

As a Shield: A Davis Morgan Mystery is about former Pastor Davis. After the death of his wife, he no longer pastors a church but is a pastor for the local law enforcement. He often rides with officer and friend Charley. Davis’s daughter is soon to be married. She and her fiance are purchasing an old house that no one has lived in but are finding their lives threatened. Two men have been hired to stop them from buying the home. The men have kidnapped the wrong lady and shot the wrong man. A visitor in town dies of natural causes but his body is stolen from the funeral home. Tattooed on his body is a location in the area.

Davis works with Charley to try to find who is threatening his daughter and her fiance. While doing so the plane they are flying in goes down and Charley’s squad car is totaled.

This is a very enjoyable mystery to get lost in. One of the things that stands out for me with this book is the friendship of the two men. As well as how Charley feels since he is not a Christian, that God was watching out for Davis and Charley’s life was saved as well. I enjoyed the humor that is woven through the story as well. I really enjoyed this book. It kept me reading until I was done reading it and kept me guessing. I am looking forward to more in this series. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to read a good mystery.

Crisis Shot by Janie Cantore

Crisis-Shot-400x600

Crisis Shot, by Janice Cantore, is book one in the Line of Duty series. Tess O’Rourke is a commander with the Long Beach police department and one morning while on her way to work she responds to a call. She finds an officer down and some young men near him. When she shots one of them, the public and some of her co-workers go against her. She takes a job as chief of police in Rogue Hollow, a very small town. She has to deal with issues surrounding being the only woman on the force and having to report to a very demanding mayor.

The pastor’s wife has found out her cancer has returned again and this time it is worse. She goes away one day and does not return. While she is gone her brother turns up dead. The police force is being forced to work extra hours to find the pastor’s wife and get to the bottom of the situation. They are also reaching out to surrounding forces for help.

I really like Janice Cantore’s books and this one is her best so far! I enjoyed how Tess and her father would make rules. Much like my favorite TV show. The suspense is carried through the entire story, both with the Long Beach shooting and situations in Rogue Hollow. One of the things that stands out for me in this story is even with what the pastor is going through he still is there to encourage others. When they find his wife injured he tells Tess that he is worried and a little frightened but he trusts God. If he didn’t, nothing in this life would make sense.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys police stories.

Portrait of Vengeance by Carrie Stuart Parks

_233_380_Book.2329.cover blb

Portrait of Vengeance is book 4 in A Gwen Marcey Novel series written by Carrie Stuart Parks. Gwen is a single mother of a teen age daughter and a cancer survivor. Her ex-husband is threatening to take their daughter from her. Her parents were killed when she was little and she was raised by a lady until she returned home to see the house filled with blood. She is on probation with her new job as a forensic artist with the Interagency Major Crime Unit when she finds out about a case of a missing girl after the murder of her parents in Lapwai, Idaho. The case takes place where she lived when she was little and sounds similar to her background so she insists on being put on the case.

In Idaho she works with the Nez Perce Tribal Police and finds herself being treated as an outsider. Her car is stolen right away so she calls a friend, Beth, to come help her. As Gwen works on the case, she has Beth doing research. They quickly discover that someone is out to get Gwen and this case may be connected to the death of Gwen parents. Her boss from the crime unit calls to check on her and she ends up losing her job. But she continues working the case with Beth’s help.

This story is so awesome, it starts out running and never lets up. This story is so full of mystery and suspense that it was hard to put down. The author writes so clearly that it is easy to imagine what is happening and to feel the suspense. While this is a Christian book, the Christian theme is very mild. It is more so a good clean police novel with violence written in it. I think anyone who enjoys reading suspense, mysteries or police stories will enjoy this book. This is the first book I have read and it appears it would be best to read the series in order.

The part in the story that stand out most for me is that there are different times and places in our lives that make us into who we are. Beth reminds Gwen that the hard times she goes through help to make her the person she is today.

Deep Extraction by DiAnn Mills

978-1-4964-1098-6

Deep Extraction, book two in An FBI Task Force Series, is written by DiAnn Mills. Nathan Moore is the extremely wealthy owner of Moore Oil & Gas. One of his rigs is boomed and he is later found dead from a heart attack. As the story evolves, it becomes evident that Nathan was killed by someone tampering with the setting for his pacemaker. FBI Agent Tori Templeton is called to investigate the crime. Tori is a long time friend of Nathan and his wife, Sally.

The Moore’s son calls a family friend, Cole Jeffers, to come be with them during the crime scene investigation. Cole is on leave from his job as a Deputy US Marshal. Cole wants to help find the person responsible for killing Nathan. He gets reinstated as a US Marshal and is assigned to the FBI task force in charge of the investigation.

Tori has been partners with Max for some time. Max has just found out he has cancer and this investigation will be his last. During the investigation he is often rude to those around him and has been reported. Together Cole, Tori and Max work together to find Nathan’s killer.

This is an awesome book. Being part of a series, it is still very much a stand alone book. The story is so full fast moving and full of action, I found it a little confusing at times. The crimes against the Moore family multiply as the story builds. Nathan has many secrets in his life that are now being found out. As his secrets come out, the amount of suspects is also building. As I was reading the book, I was trying to figure out who killed him and why. As the twists and turns in the story grew, I gave up trying and just enjoyed this great Christian Suspense/Romance.

The thing I enjoyed most in the story is the friendship that both Tori and Cole have towards the Moores. And their determination to get to the bottom of the crime without letting their friendships get in the way. I also enjoyed the building of friendship between Cole, Tori and Max. I enjoyed the subtle Christian influence in the story as well. This book would be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys detective suspense stories.

Justice Delayed by Patricia Bradley

justice-delayed-patricia-bradley

Justice Delayed is book one in A Memphis Cold Case Novel written by Patricia Bradley.

Stephanie Hollister is a airline stewardess and has found herself mixed up in a diamond smuggling group. She has decided to not be a part of it and has hidden the diamonds she found in her purse in a sculpture she is making. She is murdered and her ex-boyfriend Jimmy is found guilty and sent to prison.

Fast forward 18 years and Jimmy is now given a date for his execution, which is just days away. Stephanie’s roommate Lacey has contacted Stephanie’s younger sister Andi to meet her. Lacey is a no show and when Andi gets home someone is in her apartment and attacks her. Lacey has also sent Jimmy a letter wanting to meet him. Her letter tells him, he is not the killer.

Stephanie’s brother, Brad, is now an investigator. He and his partner Will are called to investigate Lacey’s death. Then they are called to check on Andi. And shortly after, Will received a phone call from his cousin Jimmy telling him about the letter from Lacey. Will has just a few short days to find out who the real killer is to save Jimmy’s life.

There are several little stories written within this story. Andi is a reporter and has suffered a back injury causing her to rely on pain medications to get through the day. Will and Jimmy are cousins who use to live next door to the Hollisters. Will and Brad were good friends growing up and Andi often tagged along with them. There also is a little romance written into the story. Will has feeling for Andi but does not want to act on them as it could hurt his friendship with Brad. Andi is also starting to notice her feelings for Will are changing.

This is a great suspenseful story! It starts off running and the action and suspense just keep building. The main characters in the story are Stephanie’s roommates and their boyfriends. They are well introduced so they are easy to follow along with. Clues are given through out the story as to who was involved in the diamond smuggling and who could have killed Stephanie, but it is not until the end that the real story comes out. The story has an underlying romance written into it, but it is not overwhelming. The Christian aspect of the story are direct but not preachy. If you are a person who enjoys suspenseful police stories you will enjoy this book. This story is so good, I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.

Maybe it’s You by Candace Calvert

978-1-4143-9036-9

Maybe it’s You is book three in the Crisis Team series written by Candace Calvert. This is Sloane Ferrell and Micah Prescott’s story. Sloane was severely injured in book 2 of this series. She has moved and changed her name to get away from her past. She keeps pretty much to herself and does not let people know where she lives and does not want anything about her made public. She has quit drinking as a result of the accident and has joined AA.

One day while at work, she rescues a young girl, Zoey, and gets involved in the girls life for a short while. What she does not know if the girl is working with her ex-boyfriend and is distantly connected to the Russian group that is involved in sex trafficking, gambling, arson and murder. When this becomes known, her job at the Los Angeles Hope hospital is on the line.

Micah is the PR person at Los Angeles Hope hospital as well as a member of the Crisis Team. Micah and Sloane have contact with each other with crisis situations at the ER and they slowly begin to know each other. Micah lost a family member he was close to due to a drunk driver and he continues to struggle with the loss. Micah and his reporter friend witness the rescue of Zoey. The reporter is searching for the big story that will give him a chance to get a big headline.

I love this story and the whole Crisis Team series. This story is a little slower moving than the previous two, but the story is equally wonderful. This story does not have as much action and mystery. There is a lot happening within this story but it is not clear until the end of the story what the whole picture is. This story kept me wondering where it was going and what was going to happen.

This story is more about learning to trust others and recovering from bad choices. I especially enjoy the parts in the story when Sloane struggles with issues surrounding her step-father but remembers she has a past as well. When she has the chance to keep him behind bars, she cannot go through with it.

The author is a former ER nurse and her stories are so real. It is hard to remember her stories are fiction. I like that her stories show us how Christians can show their faith just by working along side others and giving encouragement to others. Anyone who enjoys reading Contemporary Christian Romance will enjoy this book.

Step by Step by Candace Calvert

stepbystep

Step by Step is book 2 in the Crisis Team series written by Candace Calvert. This is Taylor Cabot and Seth Donovan’s story. Taylor Cabot lost her husband three years ago and is trying to move on with her life. She has made a list of things to do to move forward and is slowly checking them off. She has moved to San Diego and has started dating.

Seth has come to San Diego to train members to work with the Crisis Team. They are often called in to help council families of victims of tragic events. Seth often works the San Diego hospital ER and has reunited with Taylor. Taylor use to work with the Crisis Team, but with the encouragement of her new boyfriend, she is backing away.

Taylor still struggles with the events surrounding her husband’s death. Why was he on that road the night he was killed? Why did he have an appointment with Seth the day he died? She also is struggling with having to say goodbye to her dog, who is passing away.

I love this book! I really enjoy reading Candace Calvert stories. Being an ER nurse, this series gives us a look into events that happen within the ER setting. Her stories are written so well, it is sometimes hard to believe I am reading fiction. I like how her stories included mystery and suspense with just a little touch of romance to keep the readers interest. I also like that the story has substance to it with touching lightly on the Christian aspect in the character’s lives and how just living a Christian life, they are able to help lead others to learn about God. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to ready contemporary Christian Fiction.

Fatal Frost by Nancy Mehl

9780764217777.jpg

Fatal Frost, written by Nancy Mehl, is book 1 in the Defenders of Justice series. U. S. Marshal Mercy Brennan is in the process of reestablishing a relationship with her father, Nick, an officer with the St. Louise police department, when he is fatally shot. It has become aware that Nick was working with members of a gang, and now that Nick is dead, the gang has targeted Mercy. Mercy’s boss developed a plan for Mercy to go check on a man in the witness protection program. He also sends her ex-boyfriend and fellow marshal, Mark, and her friend and neighbor, Tally. Tally is also in law enforcement. The real reason for this assignment is to get Mercy out of town for her safety.

While on their way to the assignment, they are in a snow storm and end of going off the road. A snowmobile, driven by the supposed man they are to check on, arrives and takes them to the house he is staying at. But all is not what they are expecting. The man is really a member of the gang. Mercy, Mark and Tally have no way of knowing who they can trust. There are also moles at the U. S. Marshal department and they don’t even know if they can trust their boss. Mercy finds the chip her father left in her jacket at their last meeting and she does not share this with anyone as she does not even trust her friends.

This is a good romantic suspense book. It is more a suspense than romance as there is so much taking place in the story. There are several characters in the story but are introduced in a way that they are easy to follow. The story is written so well, that I felt cold while reading the part about being caught in the storm. I felt so sorry for Tally when he was tied up outdoors without proper clothing. While I was reading I was constantly wondering who the good guys and who the bad guys were.

I appreciate how the author used the situation Tally and Mercy were in to help show them that God is faithful and helps during even the worst situation. I also liked that while Tally was considering leaving the force for his son who was struggling with his job, Tally made the decision to stay with the force due to the death of a young man. If some good could come form this young man’s death, it would be to help other kids stay out of trouble and to know that they mattered to the world and to God.
