GodRunner by Will Hart

Everyone is called to something, somewhere.

GodRunner is a non-fiction book written by missionary Will Hart.  Will tells his story of coming to the Lord and about his missionary work.  Will was the son of hippies.  His mother became saved from listening to the radio.  She was filled by the Holy Spirit and the family thought she had gone crazy.  Even though his father was at times scared of the situation, he decided the family would follow her.  When Will was a senior in high school, he became saved and decided to be a missionary instead of going to college.  This is a book of places he’s been, people he has saved, as well as his family life.

Some of the points he makes in this book are to go out and do what the Spirt wants you to do.  You do not have to leave the country, you can be used by God right where you are, in what ever you are doing.  We are to take every opportunity God gives us to work with others.  God created us in love and he will never stop loving us.  God is seeking us and pursuing us.  He seeks us when we are least expecting it and sometimes that makes us uncomfortable.  But sometimes God has to take us to our lowest point to restore us and rediret us.

While this book is not what I expected, it is very well written and  has  good points in it.  I especially liked the parts in the book where the author talks about his young life and his mother’s personality.    I typically do not read auto-biographies, and at times it felt that this is what the book is.  I did however, think he did a good job of describing what a missionary family’s life it like.  While not going into detail, he did show the sacrifices the entire family had to make. I am giving this book a 4, only because of the auto-biography feel.

I received a copy of this book from Book Club Network.  I have chosen to write this honest review.

The New Believers Guide to the Christian Life by Alex Early

As a new believer, you may have questions about what to expect. You wonder how to please God, or what will happen is you mess up. But being a Christian isn’t about what you do. It’s about who you are: a child of God. And God loves his children unconditionally. Through his overwhelming love, he changes us from the inside out.”

Alex Early has written this book to help new believes in Christ in their Christian walk. He attempts to answer some of the questions new believer have as well as give them understanding and direction in their new life. The book contains nine chapters that cover topics such as being a child of God, prayer, baptism, being part of a church and money.

The author points out that as a Christian you have already made some important decisions, you believe that God exists and that Jesus has the power to take care of your greatest fears, and take away your guilt and shame. He also points out that God wants all of us, not part of us. He saved us to have a relationship with Him, not to use us.

The author also teaches about prayer. He spends time teaching about the Lords Prayer as well as touching on how we should pray. He are to turn to God first and foremost to pray, to pour out our troubles and complain. He also points out that as time goes on we may become distracted and our prayer life may become boring. This is normal, Christians sometimes goes through a period where they feel God is distant. When this happens we need to remember that this is because of us, not God, God is not boring and has our best interest in mind.

The author also touches on church membership and it’s role in Christian maturity. I thought his chapter on church membership was especially refreshing. So often we attend the church we grew up in, or have been attending for years, even if it is nor leading us in our walk with God. The author points out that we are to find a church that exalts Jesus, one that teaches the beliefs we believe in. We are not to look for a church because we like the gimmicks, such as their music or social activities.

I think this is a really good book, not just for new believers but long term ones as well. Some of the information in this book may be a little overwhelming for a new believer, but a good refresher for a person who has been a Christian for some time. Each of the chapters end with questions to consider. This is not a book for quick reading, but rather a book to sit and think about. The author uses a lot of Bible verses and quotations from other writers to bring his information to the reader. I think this would be a good book to pass on to new believers, or someone struggling with their Christian walk.

The Power of Right Thinking by Kerry Kirkwood

The_Power_of_Right_Thinking_FINALFRONTCOVER (1).jpg

The Power of Right Thinking, written by Kerry Kirkwood, is a book that helps the reader change their way of thinking. With the use of Bible verses, the author provides tools to learn how to renew you mind by using the Bible. As well as how to tell the difference between God’s voice and the devil’s voice. And finally to meditate on God’s promises. With the use of this book we can get out thoughts aligned with God’s and let the Holy Spirit change our way of thinking . The author points out that God says things to build us up yet Satan wants us to be toxic with thoughts of hopelessness and suspicion. We can know if our thoughts come from God, as those thoughts will give us peace and hope. We are trained to be skeptical and think bad things will happen. It is work to change our thoughts to more positive thought.

The author also points out that changing our thoughts can also affect our health. Health conditions can be caused by stress and anger issues. Toxic thoughts can turn off genes that fight diseases. Our negative thoughts can actually make us sick. When we acknowledge how powerful our thoughts can be we open up new possibilities. We can actually change our physical conditions.

There are so many important issues in this book. This is not a quick read book, it is a book to be read a little at a time, allowing time to think on what the author has written and how it can be incorporated into your thought process. It actually took me several weeks to read through this book with allowing myself time to think and ponder on what is written. I especially thought the author’s suggestion to take just a few seconds to focus on our thought process was very helpful. By doing this I have been able to see that during tough situations, my thoughts tend to be very negative. By realizing this I am more likely to turn the situations over to God.

God’s Feminist Movement by Amber Picota

gods_feminist_movement_finalfrontcoverGod’s Feminist Movement, by Amber Picota, is a great book that helps set women free and helps equip them for ministry. The author goes into detail explaining the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. We are living under the New Covenant and we are actually living under a new law, the law of Christ, which is that we love one another as He loved us. The author helps us to understand how important love is. Love helps us to do good, to not have other gods above God, to not cheat, steal or kill, Love fuels us to do good works.

Using Bible verses and stories, the author points out that women in leadership was also spoken about in the Bible. She used 2 of my favorites, Ruth who pursued Boas and the prophetess Deborah.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It shows us that women being a part of the church is not a new thing even though some people feel women do not belong in leadership in the church. The book also reaffirms that we should not take verses out of their context and use them in ways they were not intended as well as if something preached is not Biblical, it is not true.

There is so much information in this little book. The author uses Bible verses and her life experiences to teach us such things as dressing, dating and submission in marriage. The parts that really made an impression on me is that the Bible does not tell us how to dress, other than not to wear men’s clothing. Modesty is not about covering yourself up in clothing, modesty is a posture of the heart. However, if we dress to entice and arouse others, this is not love. I especially like the part that men are not animals and that we need to stop raising our boys believing the lie that they do not have the power to take their thoughts in control and turn them over to Christ. The one part that I truly appreciate the author writing is that our family is our first ministry. All to often the business of the world cause us to put our family and their needs down the priority list.

SOZO Saved/Healed/Delivered

Sozo, by Dawna Se Silva and Teresa Liebscher is not at all what I was expecting. This book is to help provide us with the tools we need to build a strong connection with God. The book give advice on how to break from the lies, addiction and hindrances that can take over our lives.

Sozo is a word used over 100 times in the New Testament. The word Sozo is Greek for healed, salvation and deliverance. In this book the authors talks about understanding the Godhead, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. She tells us that Sozo goes beyond physical healing, it embrasses the concept of Spiritual, physical, and emotional healing.

I enjoyed reading this book even though it is more a book about the Bethel Sozo program and some of the people they have helped and the ways they work to help their clients achieve healing. I especially enjoyed reading about the “Father Ladder”. In this section the authors explain the correlation between members of our family and how they affect us and which part of the Godhead ties into this. I also found what the authors said about us responding to Jesus better than God or the Holy Spirit because we feel Jesus is our savior and friend and is easier to relate to.

The book end each chapter with discussion questions, steps for activation and additional reading. The author also list resources in the book to make an appointment for a Sozo session.

Woman thou art Healed & Whole A 90 Day Devotional Journey

Woman thou art Healed & Whole is a 90 day devotional written especially for women who have experienced trauma, abuse, bad relationships and betrayal. They may struggle with having made poor decisions, feeling guilt or shame. When a woman goes through these experiences she may not be able to life a fulfilling life.

The book covers these life experiences and many more. T. D. Jakes writes this devotional starting each day with a bible verse relating to many negative life experiences for women. He follows up the bible verses with a more in depth description and end each day with “Your Healing Journey. This part provides the reader with additional bible verses to read and additional information.

Some of the things I like the most about the book are that the author reminds us that women should not look to men to determine their worth. Women need stability and they are meant to be coveted, nurtured and protected.

One of the helpful things the author mentions in the book is to write down 30 things you would like to do with your life and cross them out as you do them

This is a good book not just for women who have gone through bad experiences. All women will gain from reading this book. The books is 269 pages, broken up into 90 sessions to be covered one session per day. The book is small in dimension so would be easy to lip in a purse or overnight case to take with you.

I Believe in Jesus by John MacArthur

I Believe in Jesus, written by John MacArthur, is a beautiful book written as a resource to use with children to lead them to the Lord. The picture book contains bible stories of God and creation as well as Jesus, his birth, life, death and resurrection. The book does an awesome job of explaining the three parts of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the roles they play.

The books also covers sin and forgiveness of sin. There are two words in the Bible that tell us how we can have a place in heaven. This is a gift from God and all we have to do is believe that Jesus die for us and rose again. The second is to receive Jesus as our Savior and asking for His forgiveness.

This is a wonderful book for children. The recommended age is 2 – 5 but I feel it would be helpful even for children a little older. The younger child will find the pictures very pretty. There are several Bible stories within the book as well as information to help a child understand the process of becoming a christian, all of which are very clear and easy to understand.. There are bible verses that go with each part of the story and additional bible readings to explore more about what the stories cover. This is a book that would be very nice for anyone who works with children to have for that perfect time to help a child make the decision to follow God. The explanation of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is so easy to understand.

The Power of Prophetic Prayer

The Power of Prophetic Prayer by Kynan Bridges reminds us that the only way for us to connect with God is through prayer and prayer is a very powerful way. Prayer opens our spiritual being to the endless possibilities of God, and we have endless access to God. Through prayer we release the ambassadorial authority Christ gives us. Through prayer we bring about changes in peoples lives. We don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to have an intimate relationship with God, we can have it right now.

Kynan Bridges gives a lot of information regarding prayer, how to go to prayer, the importance of faith in prayer. He guides us in keeping the fire burning by pointing out that we need to be intentional about our prayer life, we need to meditate on the Word of God and we need to ask God to create in us a hunger for the things of God. The author points out Jesus gives us specific instructions on how to pray, “ enter into thy closet” (Matthew 6:6). The closet does not mean a room, it means a place of intimacy and disclosure. We are to acknowledge God as our Father, recognize that God is in heaven, glorify His name as holy, declare His kingdom will come on earth and in heaven. We are to ask for our daily needs, for forgiveness of sins, and forgive others. We are to pray for help in temptation and recognize God as the kingdom, power and glory. (Luke 11:2-4 and Matthew 6:9-13).

Bridges tells us to not just “pray in Jesus name”. We are to pray according to the character and nature of Jesus. We are to pray accoring to the Word of God. We are to rely completely on Jesus. We must approach God, knowing He alone is able. We are to thank God in advance and have faith and confidence that He has heard us rather than pray “if it is your will”. Bridges also reminds us that prayer is powerful and necessary. When we combine faith with prayer and fasting we get miracles, breakthrough and deliverance.

This book has so much information on prayer that to gain as much as you can from it, it will need to be read several times. Each chapter ends with Prophetic Prayer and Prophetic Insights making this book a good choice for a Bible Study on prayer. Different types of prayers, such as prayers for protection and intervention, are included as well.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is not a quick read but is very easy to understand. Scripture is used to reinforce the statement the author is making. This is a great book to use to build your prayer life. I have prayed and heard a lot on prayer but reading this book has really made me step back and take a look at my own prayer life.

Woman Thou Art Loosed!

Woman Thou Art Loosed! Written by T.D.Jakes (copyright 2016) focuses on the hurts of women. The author uses the woman at the well in Luke 13 as an example of a hurt woman. The author points out that the abuse a woman has had to deal with, can change her and can leave her bitter. He also points out that she is not responsible for what has happened to her. You can’t help where you have been or what has happened to you, but you can help where you are going from here. God doesn’t care who you are, where you came from, or even your social status, he cares about your heart. He wants to help you over come your pain and move forward. He will bring complete healing, the whole person, the body, the emotions and the spirit. He will deal with all the issues left over from abuse if we just ask him and have faith in him to heal us. God wants to give us strength to over come the pain. He wants us to celebrate who we are.
The author also touches on marriage and stresses we are to get married for the right reason. We are not to settle, we are to chose someone who is not less than what we want. We are to chose someone with strength, someone who will hold us, help strengthen us, build us up and be with us when trouble comes. He also points out that men should understand that women do not deal well with the stress of unpaid bills and financial disorder. Women need security, especially in a home. Women are made to be receivers and men were made to be givers.
This book is not what I thought it would be. I felt is was a little preachy at points. The book has some good points to it. The author uses stories from the Bible and Scripture a lot. But I was surprised the author referenced Mary Magdalene as a prostitute, no where in the Bible does it state that. The book was originally written in 1993.

Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today

Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today is written by James W. Goll. This book explains to us spiritual gifts and explains how the Holy Spirit moves through them. Spiritual gifts are tools that you need to practice using. They are given by God for ministry to take place for the good of the Body of Christ. They are given though us as acts of kindness, mercy and love towards others and we are to give them as God shows us to.

Spiritual gifts are broken up into 3 types. Revelatory Gifts are the gifts that reveal, gifts of discerning of Spirits, word of wisdom and word of knowledge. Power Gifts are the gifts that do, gifts of faith, healing and miracles. Vocal Gifts are the gifts that speak, Gift of various kinds of tongues, gift of interpretation of tongues, and the gift of prophecy.

The gifts that were interesting to me were the gift of knowledge, the gift of miracles and the gift of prophecy.. The gift of knowledge is explained as having a “gut” feeling about something. You know you know something but you do not know how you know it. The book explains that no one knows everything, only God does. The gift of miracles is something I have witnessed. Miracles are a gift, you do not earn them, and they are only given by God. You will almost always find that a miracle was sparked by an act of obedience. The gift of prophecy does not predict the future as one might think. It is a word of encouragement that is personalized and aligned with scripture. It is meant to build up a person’s faith, encourage them to do good deeds and to comfort them. Page 168 in the book has a scriptural test to confirm if the prophecy is a gift of the spirit.

This book is very interesting. I appreciate the author explaining the proper times to use spiritual gifts and the reason for them. This book is very helpful in understanding Spiritual Gifts and is an encouragement to take the step to pray for a Spiritual Gift.
