Imperfect Justice by Cara Putman

_225_350_Book.2429.cover

Imperfect Justice by Cara Putman is book 2 in the Hidden Justice series. This is one of those books you will not want to put down until you finish it! While part of a series, it is a very good stand alone book as well. The story takes off running and the suspense builds during the story.

Emilie Wesley is an attorney for a women’s resource center. She helps women who want to escape from their abusers. While she is at the court house waiting for Kaylene, to move forward with Kaylene’s restraining order against her husband, things have gone terribly bad at Kaylene’s house. Kaylene is accused of shooting her daughter’s and then herself. This event has totally shaken Emilie and she cannot move on without getting to the bottom of what really happened. She is all consumed with Kaylene’s death and neglects her other client and her reporting job.

Some time before Kaylene’s death, she delivered boxes to her brother’s home and tells him, Reid, not to open them. He opened them after her death to find a letter from her asking him to watch over her daughters should something happen to her and to contact her attorney. Reid and Emilie start working together to find evidence that will hold up in court for Reid to get custody of Kaylene’s surviving daughter.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is full of action and suspense. While the topic of abused women and children is a tough subject to read about, the author did a great job of not dwelling on that, but rather wrote about the legal issues involved with them getting away. I think anyone who enjoys legal thrillers will enjoy this book. There is just a little romance in the story for the romance readers as well.

With Love, From Me to You – Written by Mary Manz Simon, Illustrated by Corinna Ice

_225_350_Book.2447.cover

We feel God’s love inside us

when we show that we care,

by helping and forgiving

and showing how to share.”

With Love From Me to You is a hard covered board book written by Mary Mans Simon. The book is beautifully illustrated by Corinna Ice, who uses her heart and brush to paint the world. This is one of the cutest little books! The Polar Bear mailman is driving a train and delivering letters with red hearts to the little animals in the story. The story helps teach little children the lesson of showing others that they love them. Children can show others kindness by saying hi, by showing kindness to some one who is crying and to remind some one who is angry, that God loves them. Children can give kindness every day of the year to those far and near. And when they get a blessing, they know that God loves them.

This is a very cute book for little children. I just love the pictures in this book. They are so cute and colorful. Little children will enjoy picking out the different little animals and following the train through the story. They will also enjoy finding all the hearts in the pictures. With just 18 pages, it is the perfect length to hold a little one’s attention

This easy to read story for the early reader. Written in rhyme, it will be fun to read to little children. This is a very durable book that will last a long time. The cover and pages are shiny to help keep it clean.

You’re Gonna Love Me by Robin Lee Hatcher

_240_360_Book.2430.cover.jpg

Sam is an accountant in Beaverton, Oregon who feels her job is no longer what she wants. When her grandmother is injured, she goes to Thunder Creek, Idaho to help care for her. What she does not know is that her ex-boyfriend, Nick, now lives there. He was doing work on her relative’s property when he witnessed her grandmother’s accident.

While dating, Nick cared more about himself and his desires, and Sam was the one putting an effort into the relationship. Nick was an adventurous risk taker, while Sam feared any thing dangerous, which lead to their breakup. Sam tried to get in touch with Nick after their breakup, but he never answered. Now she finds out he suffered a traumatic brain injury from one of his adventures.

Nick has changed since his accident and he is now a caring individual who puts God and others ahead of himself.

I enjoyed reading this story. It is a story of second chances and shows how a person can change when they have God in their life. I liked how Sam not only cared for her grandmother physically, but also cared about her grandmother’s business as well. Her grandmother had so much energy for someone suffering from a major injury, also caring for others. This is a really good story and I feel anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction will enjoy it. This story is also a contemporary romance.

Really Woolly Christmas Blessings by Bonnie Rickner Jensen, Illustrated by Donna Chapman

_225_350_Book.2368.cover

Really Woolly Christmas Blessings is written by Bonnie Rickner Jensen and illustrated by Donna Chapman. The book contains 18 sections that are titled “The Blessing of”. These blessing include Jesus and the things associated with his birth as well as different things we include in our Christmas traditions. Each of the 18 sections is made up of a bible verse, a poem and end with a short prayer.

This is a hard covered board book that is very durable for young children. The pages contain brightly colored pictures and are easy to clean. There are little animals that follow through the story for children to point to. The little lamb, bunny, duck and chipmunks are really adorable.

This is a cute story book for older toddlers. Being a board book I expected to see more pictures and less words. With the 8 lined poems on each pages, this book really is not a story book to read through at one sitting for the youngest children. With the sections ending in prayers, this is a good book to help young children learn to pray to God. I think this book could be used to introduce per-schoolers to devotional time.

Blue Ridge Sunrise by Denise Hunter

_225_350_Book.2398.cover

Blue Ridge Sunrise, by Denise Hunter, is book one in A Blue Ridge Romance series. Zoe left home five years earlier and joined a band with her current boyfriend Kyle. Kyle, Zoe and her young daughter returned home for her grandmother’s funeral. They had not planned to stay, but when the will was read, Zoe found out she was the new owner of her grandmother’s orchard. After a disagreement, Kyle left and Zoe was alone in Copper Creak with her daughter. She had no vehicle and no money.

When Zoe decided to run the orchard, she found out the orchard is financially hurting and her ex-boyfriend, Cruz, is now the manager. In an effort to turn the orchard’s finances around, Zoe and her crew clean up a building and converted it to a shop. Just as it was getting ready to open, the shop burned and Zoe is suspected of burning it for insurance money.

This is a really good story. It is fast paced and had a lot of action and suspense in the story. The story also has a little romance without getting overwhelming. The parts in the story that I really enjoyed were the memories Zoe had of her grandmother. The other things that stands out in the book is when Zoe realizes that her life cannot be planned by any man, or even herself. God is the one that has plans for her. I think anyone who enjoys reading contemporary fiction stories will enjoy this book.

Love Held Captive by Shelley Shepard Gray

_140_245_Book.2371.cover

Love Held Captive, by Shelley Shepard Gray, is book three in A Lone Star Hero’s Love Story series. This story takes place after the Civil War. Soldiers often raided homes and left the owners with nothing. Lizabeth was one of these owners. She was forced to turn to her cousin for employment. She is a maid at a hotel when she is cleaning Adam’s room, he comes and and makes advances at her. This is the man that raided her homes first and left her injured. She ran from his room, thinking Major Ethan Kelly’s rooms were vacant she ran to those to hide. When her cousin finds out, she is fired. When Ethan finds out what happened, he fears for Lizabeth’s safety and moves her to a home of a friend of his.

During the war Julianne met Adam, thinking he was single and about to propose, she had a relationship with him. She was caring for her grandmother who was very ill and both were starving. She became Adams mistress to provide for her and her grandmother. After the war, he ended the relationship to return to his wife. He returned to visit Julianne and Captain Devin Monroe is also showing an interest in Julianne. He shots Devin in the back as he rides home from visiting Julianne. Devin’s horse takes him to the hotel where Ethan is staying.

As Devin heals from his injury, Lizabeth and Julianne confess their pasts with Adam. Ethan and Devin call in a couple friends from their war years and together the men go after Adam.

This is a good story. The characters are well introduced and a lot of back ground information was given. It was very easy to follow along, however it felt like it also made the story move to slow. The story bounces between 1865 and 1867 to give additional background as the story moves on. The story is one of brotherhood that is formed between the soldiers that were held as prisoners. The story also shows us how Lizabeth and Julianne were forced to do things they didn’t want, as a way to survive, and the guilt they carried with them because of it. It also shows us how while Lizabeth was working just to survive, she as not able to get past the pain of hat happened to her and move on with her life.

Once I got into the story I really enjoyed it. I think anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction that contains romance as well as some suspense will enjoy this book. Even though it is part of a series, this is also a stand alone book.

Christmas at Carnton by Tamera Alexander

000001598.png

Christmas at Carnton is a novella written by Tamera Alexander that takes place in Franklin, Tennessee during the Civil War. Aletta Prescott’s husband was recently killed in the war and she is left to take care of herself, her six year old son and her unborn child. She lost her job and has been notified the bank is taking her house. She has just two weeks to find someplace to live. She takes a job at Carnton Plantation to work for the Women’s Relief Society.

Captain Jake Winston is shot in the shoulder and suffers a head injury that affects his vision. He wants to return to the war but cannot focus to do his job as a sharpshooter. Jake has been ordered to go to Carnton Plantation to represent the soldiers at the Women Relief Society auction. Jake also assists Aletta with making the nativity for the event.

This is a wonderful story. The story is based on a real plantation and the cook is based on the real life cook at the plantation. The story also focuses on the Women’s Relief Society that was active during the Civil War. I really enjoyed reading about the work the women were doing to help the soldiers. This story is a reminder to us of how lives were changed with the Civil War. Part of the story that I really likes was when Jake realized that even though the women were not out fighting the was, the war was changing their lives. Many soldiers lost their lives and their wives were left behind to support themselves and their families. This is a story of hope and faith that God will provide when there is a need. Another thing I really enjoy about this book is the author shares the recipes of items mentioned in the book and also shares with us her plans for upcoming books based on characters from this book.

An Amish Christmas Love – Four Novellas by Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipston, Ruth Reid and Kelly Irvin

_225_350_Book.2341.cover

An Amish Christmas Love is a book containing four novellas. Each of the stories is just under 90 pages long and contain the theme of love at Christmas.

Winter Kisses by Beth Wiseman is a story of a family of ladies spanning three generations. Naomi has not allowed herself to get into a relationship due to the loss her mother and grandmother had when losing their husbands. The women have rented their daadi haus to three men .

The Christmas Cat, by Amy Clipston, is a story of Emma, who lost her husband in July after 45 years of marriage. A cat has chosen her home to go to and has taken over her husband’s chair. When Emma is not able to go to a neighbor’s home for dinner, the younger members take dinner to her.

In Snow Angel, by Kelly Irvin, David and Molly have been seeing each other for a year. David has not been able to move forward with the relationship, until his Englisch ex-girlfriend comes back to town and wants him back.

And Home for Christmas, by Ruth Reid, beings Englischer Ellie back home when she inherits her aunts home. She intends to get the home sold so she can go back to her Englisch life.

These are four very good short stories. The characters are remembering past loves. The stories are the perfect length to read in an evening. I enjoyed reading them all. I think anyone who enjoys Amish stories will enjoy this book.

A couple of things that stand out to me are:

In The Christmas Cat, one of the young ladies asked Emma how she made it through their struggles. Her response was “We just kept our faith in God and believed He would get us through somehow.” Emma’s husband had a feed store that went through financial struggles. And even though they wanted children, they were not able to have them.

In Home for Christmas, Ellie is looking through her aunt’s belongings and find a letter her aunt left Ellie in her journals. Her aunt wants her to find wealth of faith and the power of God in the pages of the journal. The journal contains not only things about her aunt but also the people she was praying for.

A Time To Stand by Robert Whitlow

atts.jpg

A Time to Stand by Robert Whitlow is the perfect book to curl up with and read! This contemporary fiction takes place in Georgia. Adisa Johnson, a young African-American attorney is working in Atlanta when she loses her job. At the same time her great aunt, who raised her, suffers from a stroke and needs some one to care for her. Adisa returns home to Campbellton to be near her great aunt. She takes a temporary job with a law firm under the condition she represent the white police officer that shot a black youth.

If you enjoy legal dramas you will totally enjoy this story. The story is very well written and focuses on forgiveness and doing what is right. The story feels like it could be taken from today’s newspapers, very current and very real. The things that stands out to me is Aunt Josie walking through the town praying for members of the community. I also respect the character of Thelma Armistead, having the strength to stand in front of her church and forgive those involved in the shooting of her grandson. I felt frustrated with the pastor’s position, I wished he would have had more forgiveness and less demand for justice. Overall this is a very good story, it is not so fast moving that the reader struggles to keep up with the story. The characters are very well introduced with background information so they are easy to follow.

Portrait of Vengeance by Carrie Stuart Parks

_233_380_Book.2329.cover blb

Portrait of Vengeance is book 4 in A Gwen Marcey Novel series written by Carrie Stuart Parks. Gwen is a single mother of a teen age daughter and a cancer survivor. Her ex-husband is threatening to take their daughter from her. Her parents were killed when she was little and she was raised by a lady until she returned home to see the house filled with blood. She is on probation with her new job as a forensic artist with the Interagency Major Crime Unit when she finds out about a case of a missing girl after the murder of her parents in Lapwai, Idaho. The case takes place where she lived when she was little and sounds similar to her background so she insists on being put on the case.

In Idaho she works with the Nez Perce Tribal Police and finds herself being treated as an outsider. Her car is stolen right away so she calls a friend, Beth, to come help her. As Gwen works on the case, she has Beth doing research. They quickly discover that someone is out to get Gwen and this case may be connected to the death of Gwen parents. Her boss from the crime unit calls to check on her and she ends up losing her job. But she continues working the case with Beth’s help.

This story is so awesome, it starts out running and never lets up. This story is so full of mystery and suspense that it was hard to put down. The author writes so clearly that it is easy to imagine what is happening and to feel the suspense. While this is a Christian book, the Christian theme is very mild. It is more so a good clean police novel with violence written in it. I think anyone who enjoys reading suspense, mysteries or police stories will enjoy this book. This is the first book I have read and it appears it would be best to read the series in order.

The part in the story that stand out most for me is that there are different times and places in our lives that make us into who we are. Beth reminds Gwen that the hard times she goes through help to make her the person she is today.
